Podcast

In the Appleton podcast we will hear what several guests connected to contemporary art have to say about their activity and issues related to it. This podcast does not have a pre-defined periodicity nor a pre-established format: it can take the form of a conversation with a guest, a conversation with more than one guest, a monologue, whatever the circumstances allow. Also the subjects will vary depending on the guest and the context.

The Appleton podcast is supported since 2020 by Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and República Portuguesa – Dgartes.

Grant

The Bolsa Appleton, worth 9,000 euros, is intended for Portuguese artists living in Portugal, at least 25 years old, for residence in a foreign city for five months. In the first edition, in 2019, the chosen city was Brussels and the grant was awarded to the artist Augusto Alves da Silva. This edition had to be postponed because of the pandemic and the winning artist not having the opportunity to go in 2022 gave it up in favor of Ramiro Guerreiro one of the other 5 finalists chosen by the jury.

The non-funding by DGArtes in 2023/24 postponed the second edition of the Grant, scheduled for 2025/26.

The purpose of the Bolsa Appleton is to support an artist of Portuguese nationality and resident in Portugal, with a minimum age of 25 years, for residency in a foreign city for five months. The city chosen in the first edition was Brussels, and the residency must take place in a specific period (the date is not defined due to the limitations imposed by the pandemic). The documents needed for the application are: copy of citizen card or similar, document proving residence, letter of intentions, in which the artist exposes the reasons and motivations for his/her candidacy, portfolio and CV.

The jury is made up of Vera Appleton, Luísa Santos, and Miguel Wandschneider.

In a first phase, the jury selects the finalist candidates. In a second phase, the jury will interview each of the finalists in order to select the winner of the scholarship.

The jury’s decisions are not subject to any appeal.

All candidates will be informed whether or not they have been selected as finalists. Each of the finalists will be called for an interview with the jury. The winner of the scholarship will be announced no later than 5 days after the last interview.

The Bolsa Appleton is worth 9,000 euros. Appleton will be responsible for the purchase of round-trip airline tickets and accommodation, as well as personal accident insurance, all of which will be deducted from the scholarship amount. The remaining funds will be paid to the grantee, during his/her residence in Brussels, upon presentation of receipts or invoices in the name of Appleton Associação Cultural.

The scholarship will be cancelled if the grantee does not live in Brussels for the stipulated period of five months.

Appleton Associação Cultural may process personal data collected in this context directly and/or through subcontractors for this purpose. Within and for the purpose of the award and management of the grant, Appleton Associação Cultural may communicate the applicants’ data to partner entities for the purpose of managing publications and institutional communications. These entities may be based inside or outside the European Union, and in the latter case, appropriate mechanisms will be employed at all times, under the applicable legislation, to safeguard the security of personal data processed.

Ramiro Guerreiro, Appleton 2019 scholarship winner.

Ramiro Guerreiro has been developing and exhibiting work since the 2000s, critically exploring the relationship between body, space and architecture. He has made several site-specific installations and created works using drawing, performance, video, printed publications, as well as working with and from documentary objects. Sometimes resorting to an ironic attitude towards the surrounding urban reality, his proposals seek to investigate alternative ways of using cities and their constituent elements. R.G. thus empirically investigates the ways in which architecture and urban politics condition and control our ways of seeing, being and feeling, and seeks to counter the invisible mechanisms of control.

Guerreiro attended the Architecture course at the University of Porto and later the Independent Studies Program at Maumaus – School of Visual Arts, Lisbon. He did artistic residencies at Casa de Velazquez in Madrid (2008) and at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2015), both with grants from the C. Gulbenkian Foundation, did the program Le Pavillon at Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2010) with a grant from the Ministry of Culture of the French Republic, among other residencies of shorter duration.

He regularly collaborates with other artists, choreographers and groups, in various presentation formats, as a performer, author or co-author.

Itinerancies

Itinerancies are generally “displacements” of exhibitions that took place in Appleton’s space to outside spaces. Sometimes and according to the characteristics of external spaces, artists may adapt projects or even propose different ones.

The main goal is to decentralize and reach a wider public. On the other hand, and according to the relationship with the partners, Appleton’s space may also be occupied and serve to present projects that otherwise would not be seen in Lisbon.

Between 2019 and 2024 the partners for Appleton’s itinerancy have been: DIDAC in Santiago de Compostela, Projeto Fidalga in São Paulo, Projecto Pontes/ARS in Fundão, Fábrica da Criatividade in Castelo Branco and Osso in Caldas da Rainha.

List of some Appleton itinerante artists (2020-2024):

Ângela Ferreira, Fernanda Fragateiro, Luisa Cunha, Tatiana Macedo, Vasco Araújo (DIDAC) João Pimenta Gomes, Belén Uriel (Fidalga) Tiago Madaleno, Mariana Gomes, Joana Villaverde, João Pimenta Gomes, Francisco Vidal, Joana Patrão, Sarah Basha, Mariana Vasco Costa, Tiago Alexandre, Sara Mealha (ARS/Projecto Pontes) Ilha de Calipso – Pedro Tropa, Teresa Santos e João Pimenta Gomes (Fábrica da Criatividade)

SANDBOX – Mediation Services
Conception: Joana Patrão and José Costa
Execution (between 2020 and 2023): Joana Patrão and José Costa

Execution since 2023: Marília Marques

Sandboxes are public places where children can play and experiment. Based on the idea of creative freedom, these places are also based on the autonomy of those who play – the sandboxes don’t present a game by themselves, but a space where the game can exist.  They are therefore stages where creativity can be exercised and displayed.

The term sandbox has since been appropriated by the computer language according to a similar philosophy: it becomes a virtual place where programs can be tested without fear of potential damage to the system. The same happens with the sub-genre of sandbox video games: virtual spaces where the player has at his disposal a set of tools to create situations and make autonomous decisions, choosing his own paths, actions and adventures.

The Sandbox educational project intends to unite the physical sandboxes with the virtual ones. By establishing a space for experimentation, it seeks to think of the mediation and educational process as an autonomous game in constant construction, proposing tools to expand its possibilities in each interaction, exhibition or moment.

fAV – Visual Arts Fórum

https://forumartesvisuais.pt/

The forum is an annual event that promotes debate and good practices in the Visual Arts sector

1st edition,
on June 22, 2024,
at Appleton – Cultural Association,
in Lisbon

fAV – Visual Arts Forum is a new and unprecedented event that will be held every year, with the aim of debating the sector’s problems.

Given the lack of formal debate and public affirmation of its issues, the Visual Arts sector thus intends to bring together its various professionals once a year, with the aim of thinking about and pointing out solutions to the limitations they encounter in the development of their work.

The idea behind it is that all those involved in the sector are represented: artists, gallery owners, independent spaces, institutions, publications, curators, programmers, collectors, local authorities and the central government, who are invited to take part in the same event for the first time.

fAV – Visual Arts Forum is organized by AAVP – Associação de Artistas Visuais em Portugal, Appleton – Associação Cultural and Umbigo Magazine, and invitations to participate are aimed at all professionals in the sector. This first year, it will take place on June 22, 2024 at the Appleton – Associação Cultural in Alvalade, Lisbon.

Each year, two themes will be chosen to be debated at various round tables and then a document will be presented for public subscription by professionals in the sector, so that it can be disseminated to the media and agents in the field who can, and should, question and improve their professional practices.

The intention is that the Visual Arts will thus have an appropriate and respected voice to represent their problems, as well as an annual meeting to discuss their issues.

Creation

Appleton’s creation residencies consist of the loan of Appleton’s physical space during periods when it is closed to the public, or the conceptual and logistical support by Appleton’s team, for the realization of projects and the consequent creation of new artistic works. The creative residencies of 2022 were Luís Rocha at Appleton Box starting in December 2021 ending in January 2022, Carlos Nunes at Appleton Square in August – September and Daniel Moreira and Rita Castro Neves between October and November.

In 2023 we started a new partnership with the “Paulo Reis” Residency of Fidalga.
The artists chosen for this exchange were João Pimenta Gomes who went during the month of June 2023 to São Paulo and Leka Mendes during the months of August and September, culminating in an exhibition at Box in September 2023.

2024 is a year in which we have diversified the residencies, establishing more exchanges, the first being the artist Belén Uriel with the Fidalga Project in April, establishing the exchange with the artist Ding Musa who will come in August to prepare his exhibition at Box in September. On a national level, Xavier Ovídio was at O Espaço do Tempo in May, and we’ll be welcoming Flávio Rodrigues in November. Carla Cabanas is at Córtex frontal for a month in June and will be organizing an exhibition at Appleton in October. In August, João Timóteo will be at Officina Mundi in Avis.

MARGARIDA APPLETON LIBRARY

The Margarida Appleton Library is the result of the organization of books that Appleton has published, produced, received or acquired over the years. It is a collection of publications, of very different types, on the theme of contemporary art, which are now being transferred from the private to the public sphere.

The first presentation of the Margarida Appleton library will take place at FARRA at the Cine-Teatro de Elvas, where around 400 books will be available for consultation. In all, the library has more than 700 publications. Any visitor will be able to access the library’s database and consult the publication that interests them on site for as long as they like, within the hours of the space. The database will soon be accessible online so that you can make an appointment to consult it.

Special thanks to Ana Nobre de Gusmão who organized the database from scratch and donated many books that were part of her estate with the artist Michael Biberstein.
